The Boys of Summer

Baseball was the first professional sport I saw played live. It was a Baltimore Orioles game with my parents. I have always had a soft spot for the Orioles and they are my AL team of choice.

We moved to Atlanta in the late 60s and watched the Braves. If you remember anything about the Braves in the late 60s or early 70s, you would recall how painful it was to watch them. I can remember kids at school wearing baseball shirts from other teams. This changed in the 90s when the farm team came into its own and the Braves were something to watch. It was worth suffering through the 70s and the 80s to get to the 90s. We went to a few games as a family in good times and bad. My parents still watch the games and have hopes that the team is not going to totally dissolve this year.

Peter is a Mets fan and makes no bones about it. No one is expecting much from the Mets this year. It is a “rebuilding” year for the team. Unlike the Yankees and the Marlins, the Mets couldn’t buy a pennant through their payroll. Last year through injury, trading, and dumping, the Mets took their payroll way down from what it had been. At the end of last season, they brought a bunch of kids up from the minors to fill needed positions. These kids did pretty well and a number are playing this year.

Glavin pitching for the Mets is a bit of a sore point with my parents. They liked Glavin and Maddux pitching for the Braves. I like seeing Glavin pitch live again. Right now the Braves have a number of holes in their ball club so they are looking at “rebuilding” too.

Today I am going to the Mets vs. Giants game. Bonds may be playing or he may not. From last nights game it is apparent that the Giants REALLY need him to play. I am hoping we won’t be rained out but our seats are under the overhang so it is less of a problem than it has been before. We have Seo (1-3) on the mound vs. Williams (3-1) which doesn’t fill me with great joy and hope. There is still something about going to a major league ballpark and watching a game that even if it looks like your team is going to loose, it’s still fun.

I also enjoy the heck out of the Long Island Ducks. The tickets are not that expensive. All the seats are close enough to the field that you can hear the impact of the ball hitting the catchers mitt. It is a very family friendly ballpark with lots of convenient parking. I know we will be going to several Ducks games this summer which will be a lot of fun.

So I am off to get some business done in the city and then go watch the Mets play. Life is good.
