Part of the problem is that the big drug companies give huge incentives to doctors to prescribe their newest shiny pill. Between that and the advertising, it's easy to see how people wind up taking stuff that maybe they really shouldn't.

Don't get me started on how reprehensible it is when the drugs being pushed and not tested properly are antidepressants. I have seen first-hand what happens.
