NaNoWriMo looms on the Horizon

This time next week we will be off to the races with NaNoWriMo.

I think it is appropriate that it starts after Halloween. It can be one big scary project or a lot of little scary projects rolled up into one. The first year I did it, I got through the first week. The second year I made it to the end of week 2 but then dropped it. So this year I'll be happy if I make it to week three.

I now have three ideas that I am churning around in my brain for the challenge. Two of them are probably not novel length but really long short stories. The third is one I have been working on off and on for the last five years. One is theater related. One has an Asian spin. One has an Irish spin.

I also have a Doyle/Lovecraft crossover that I started for "Shadows over Baker Street" but never turned in. That's on a whole other computer.

I have a million ideas but I think all people do. Some can write and expand on these ideas and others talk about what they might do with the ideas and other people act on their ideas. I need to start writing my ideas down and expanding on them. I can write and I can write well. Now I need to learn to write long.

I am grateful that I can put my ideas together in a coherent fashion.

*smiles* I'm always impressed with folks who can write short stories. I have such a hard time keeping a tale short and to the point. :D

Word. A friend/former girlfriend of mine is especially fond of short stories partly because, as she said, "I can't write them; I don't know where to stop." I should suggest she try writing a novel then... ;-)

I'm in a similiar situation. I have three ideas, and no commitment to just one as my favourite.

Maybe I need to come up with a fourth idea and then roll a 4-sided die to decide which one to write about.

Theno

Or have a Survivor competition between the ideas and see which one survives *grin*

Short stories are easy for me. Maybe because I have been working with authors so long as an editor, I can see where the end is or could be.

Or at least a novelle.

*nods* My worlds have a way of expanding. :D
I've written one short story and it was a massive struggle to get it ended. I think it was about 30 pages or something.

Or a novely! (Diminutive of 'novel.' I just made it up. Can it be more cutesy than "novelette"? Possibly so!)

Which I should try writing. Should I put my money where my mouth is? Should I sign up again for NaNoWriMo? Such...tough...decisioning! Having...trouble...making it... (but having no problem imitating Shatner...)

I might have to do NaNo again. (Don't tell [livejournal.com profile] slipjig!)

I must admit to being torn whether to do NaNoWriMo again; had a blast doing it four years ago, and ended up getting some good press and publicity after it was later published online on silverbulletcomicbooks.com

But there's no doubt that working a full week and then writing 1,700 words a night for a month half killed me.

Ooooh, yay! Another person to NaNo-courage. Want to be writing buddies?

"Novely." Sounds like an Eastern European surname.

I have not the courage for Nano.

I also believe I lack the skill.

I will stand on the sidelines and do the cheerleader thing.
