Druss' Axe is Broken
I first read David Gemmell on the insistence of a gaming buddy. I read a couple of books and enjoyed them. The first week I was an editorial assistant I was "introduced" to David through e-mail since the editor I was working for, Steve Saffel, was his editor. Shortly there after he came over to the states for a conference and stopped by the offices. I was helping him sign some books for publicity and we discussed rugby, which he had a passion for, and weapons of the ages along with a number of other subjects. It was a very pleasant afternoon. I also went to my first company lunch that day with David and as we all walked he asked me what various buildings were and what part of New York we were in. I spent the next week reading all the David Gemmell books we had including a few that had been published in the UK and not in the US yet. We parted on friendly terms.
Over the years I was at Del Rey, I worked with David on various projects since I was Steve's assistant. He sent me a nice note when he found out that I was getting married. The next time I saw him I was pregnant with Caroline. He congratulated Peter and me on our impending arrival. The Del Rey gang had one dinner together at that Comic Con. I sat next to David and we chatted about bunched of stuff. David was always good for a conversation. When he found out that I had been let go he sent me an e-mail expressing his sorrow that I was leaving Del Rey and that he appreciated all I had done for him. Always polite and a true gentleman which was strange for him to hear since, as he would say, he came from a working class background.
I found out that David passed away due to complications from heart surgery. He will never finish his Troy series. Somebody might be able to construct it from his notes but it won't be David's voice. I am very saddened by his passing. He was a wonderful writer who was starting to find an audience in the US after being so popular in the UK. I'm going to find my copy of "Legend" and reread it.
I am grateful that I met David.
