A Matter of Balance

In Europe during the middle ages and onto the period of enlightenment there was a firm belief that illness was caused by an imbalance of the various humors in the body. You cured the illness by countering the humor that was causing the problem. In many forms of Oriental medicine if the chi is out of balance then you are too. People who feel ill many times say that they don't feel like themselves. I always felt like I was out of balance with myself when I was ill. We are hearing more and more from doctors and other persons of knowledge that we need balance in our lives. If we active this balance we will live longer and happier lives.

I was talking to a couple of my on-line buddies last night about a bunch of stuff and something one of them said just triggered my brain to bring this thought forward. I realized in that moment that I have been feeling very out of balance recently. I keep taking some weird hits from all around me and this has put me very much on the defensive when I shouldn't be. I know who I am and what I am capable of and others who can't see that well it is their loss. I am still going to try and someone will get a great loyal employee.

I think all artists second guess themselves about their work. I know very few that feel that they achieved everything they wanted to achieve in a given piece of art. They accept your compliments but in the back of their head they know what they wanted to do and couldn't. I didn't sell anything at DragonCon but I also couldn't put my prices lower due to the time and materials that went into the pieces. There was one that I priced into the stratosphere because I wanted to hang onto it but if someone was willing to give me that amount of money I could part with the piece. I know I gave a lot of people a reason to chuckle. The artist sitting across from my work told me that I amused quite a few people with my puppets. Would I have liked to sell a couple of pieces? Sure. I probably eventually will sell most of them for the price I set. I have ideas for some other pieces I want to do that are not puppets but masks and dolls. I also have some ideas for toy-theater and shadow boxes that I want to give a go to. But I have to balance my wanting to do that and what I need to do to keep hearth and home healthy and in some sort of order.

I can finally talk about the mysterious Showcase I am stage-managing in New York. It is called Most Happy: A Story of Anne Bolyne . We'll be running for 3 weeks in October. I couldn't really say anything until we had the Equity paperwork in order. The director was at the Yale School of Drama the same time I was. He and I did a couple of projects together during our time there. 15 years later we are working on the inaugural production for the Unofficial New York Yale Cabaret. I'll post the dates and where a little closer to October.

I am grateful for balance in my life
