Travel Day CCC 2005

This is being posted later than it was written. I found out that I have an Internet connection if I step into the atrium of the hotel. Amazing that.

Traveling with small children can be a crapshoot. You never know how they are going to act or react to what is happening around them. I was reminded during this flight how much I am blessed with Caroline and her ability to travel without complaint.

We got to the airport a bit early which is always better than the alternative. We ran into our friend Richard Pini and caught up on news. Caroline had fun running around the gate area until we boarded the plane. We got on and sat on the runway due to a thunderstorm that was passing over the airport. We were given clearance to take off and then it took another 30 minutes to get to the front of the line for the runway. Caroline took it all in stride and fell asleep sitting between Peter and me.

Across the row were two women with a 6 month old and a 16 month old. The older boy didn't really like flying and he was teething too so the fussy factor was up. We had some brief periods of peace and the women worked really hard to keep the kids happy and quiet but there was a scream factor to the whole trip. Caroline woke up during the last half hour of the trip and played quietly with the toys she packed in her little Dora purse.

After the usual luggage adventures, our hosts took us to the hotel where the convention is hosted. Richard, Ariel, and I went out to an all you can eat sushi buffet and pigged out. Peter, who is not partial to sushi, remained in the hotel room and watched Caroline who was a bundle of energy having taking a 3 hours power nap. We knew that she would not do well in a restaurant have been a good sitter for 6 hours.

When we got back, Richard went off with Peter for a hunt for a crib which had not appeared. Housekeeping had brought us a roll-away bed which Ariel and I were working out the logistics on when Peter and the hotel manager show up with a crib. Caroline was so happy. She immediately put her nighttime companions in the crib and asked to be put in. She gave a happy sigh and played quietly with her toys until she fell asleep.

Peter and I set up my work in the Art show and then came back to the room to check on the girls and get some sleep. Caroline woke up at 5:30 which for her little internal clock was 6:30 so I have been up for a while with her.
