Torah Torah Torah
Last night I held part of the Torah. It was the Simchat Torah service where the cantor and, in this case, the congregation say the last and first words of the Torah. To get back to the beginning they unroll the torah in the hands of the congregation and then roll it back to the beginning. I had just picked up Caroline who had been running around like one of Peter Pan’s lost boys and happen to be standing as the rabbi came by unrolling the Torah. He said he needed more hands to hold the Torah and everyone should help. So I found myself with a hand under the Torah and the other arm around Caroline who was seating on my hip. It felt smooth and the writing was so detailed and precise. These are created by hand on animal hide. They rolled the Torah back up and the ceremony was over.
Ariel did well with her part of the service last night. I saw her father and mother present her with the prayer shawl that her father wore for his Bar Mitzvah. She looked so grown up. Her father and mother did well with their parts of the service too.
Most of my time was occupied with keeping an eye on Caroline. She has been to the synagogue a couple of times. One thing she does know is where the playground is. We ended up there a couple of time but she allowed me to be in the temple at the important times. I really like the Rabbi there. He has great enthusiasm for his work and he is great with the children.
A few more things around the house and it is clean. Now to try to maintain it will be the next step. As I look around I see that this house does reflect us. How many adults have an Opus Penguin on top of their TV set? There is the stray puppet and the painting of the cover to Woad to Wuin. A couple of pieces of comic book art and animation cells also adorn the walls. We have two calendars up Cirque De Soleil and Froud’s Goblins. The books on the shelves could be used to stock a small library between the number and the diversity of subjects. Action figures that belong to the adults are high up to keep them away from tiny hands. I like my home.
I am grateful for food.
