Golden Foils

Halloween is coming up as is our annual trip to the RenFaire. Peter and I were talking about what Caroline could dress up as. We do have her Toby outfit from Shoreleave but it doesn’t make much sense out of context. Her Stitch outfit from last year is waaaay too small for her. It is a matter of the costume fitting the personality of the wearer. Maybe a bear since she loves her stuffed bears. For the Ren Faire we were going to dress Peter up as King Arthur (from Monty Python and the Holy Grail) and I was going to dress up as Patsy with Caroline dressed as “Sir not appearing in the picture” in her backpack on my back. But it doesn’t look like I am going to be with Peter and Ariel when they go which is fine. I am going to take a little time after DragonCon to visit with my folks and let them spend sometime with their granddaughter.

I am so proud of Mariel Zagunis. She won gold in the inaugural Olympic Women’s Saber competition. First American to win gold in fencing since 1904. Yes, 100 years. I am glad that women can now fence saber. It was my favorite blade when I was fencing but I couldn’t fence it competitively since women didn’t fence saber so I settled for epee instead. I liked saber because it was the closest blade to real fighting. Any hit counted from the top of the head to the tip of the toe. I can still feel the ringing in my ears when my fencing instructor used me for target practice in showing what is legal in Saber. I wasn’t paying total attention and he rewarded me with a knock up side the head. He was a good coach and drilled the fundamentals into us. I miss fencing.

The weather seems to be making up its mind. There was heavy cloud cover when I got up with Caroline and now we have sunshine but I can see more clouds rolling in. With all the rain, the lawn looks nice. We had some minor flooding which we now have to deal with. Unfortunately part of it soaked into our laserdisc collection so I have lots of mold to clean up as well as to look at what can be salvaged at this point. The disks are fine. The jackets and sleeves are damaged. My studio fortunately has a portable air conditioner in it so I can turn it on and dry out the studio since it has been so humid.

I am grateful for my skills learned from years of theater.
